From Faded to Fresh: A Navy Exterior Makeover in Covington at Lake Norman
We recently completed an exterior painting project in Denver, NC, in the Covington at Lake Norman community, and the color change is easy to see. The homeowners were ready to move away from a faded, uneven exterior and give the house a cleaner, sharper look. Just as important, we needed to make sure the surface underneath the new color was ready for the change.
This project was not just about choosing a darker color. The siding needed careful preparation, the full exterior needed a consistent foundation, and the finish needed to hold up to the elements.
For this home, we used Sherwin-Williams products from primer through the final coat and built the color plan around deep navy siding, light accent areas, and crisp white trim.
When The Denver, NC Exterior Paint Starts to Show Its Age
Before we started, the siding had become noticeably faded and uneven. The change was especially visible in areas that received the most sun exposure. That unevenness can make an otherwise well-kept exterior look tired because one side of the house may read differently from another.
The homeowners wanted the exterior to look consistent again, and they were ready for a stronger color that would give the home more presence.
A bold color draws attention to the surface underneath, so proper preparation was especially important. We approached the project with the goal of creating one consistent base across the exterior before applying the new finish color.
Prep Came First
Our team thoroughly prepared the exterior before painting. Once the surface was ready, we primed the entire home with Sherwin-Williams Loxon Primer.
Priming the full exterior gave us a consistent foundation for the new colors. On a project where the existing siding has faded unevenly, that step matters because the finish coat should not have to compete with different conditions underneath it.
It also gave the color change a clean starting point. The home was moving from a much lighter, weathered appearance to a deep navy, so we wanted the finish to look even from one elevation to the next.
We do not look at prep as a separate part of the job that happens before the “real” painting starts. Prep is part of the painting job. The finished color gets the attention, but the work underneath it is what helps that color look clean and consistent when the project is complete.
The Color Plan: In the Navy, On the Rocks, and Extra White
When selecting the new exterior paint colors, the homeowners chose a three-color combination from Sherwin-Williams:
- In the Navy for the siding
- On the Rocks for the accent areas
- Extra White for the trim
In the Navy gave the siding the biggest visual change. It is a deep blue that immediately made the exterior feel more defined. Against the lighter elements of the home, the navy created contrast without competing with the existing stone details.
On the Rocks was used on the accent areas. Keeping those sections lighter helped break up the darker siding and gave the exterior some balance.
Extra White was used for the trim. The white garage doors, fascia, gutters, window trim, and other light details stand out cleanly against the navy siding. That contrast is especially noticeable around the garage and roofline.
The combination also works from multiple sides of the house. From the front, the navy supports the stone and white garage doors. Along the side and back, where larger stretches of siding are visible, the deeper color gives the home a stronger, more finished appearance.
Why the Details Matter on a Dark Exterior
Changing a home from a lighter exterior to a deep navy puts more attention on edges, transitions, and trim. The siding color becomes a strong background, which means the lighter details need to look deliberate.
You can see that around the garage area on this project. The white doors and trim are framed by the navy siding, while the stone adds another natural texture. Instead of every surface blending together, each part of the exterior has its own role.
The same is true along the side elevations. White gutters, downspouts, window trim, and corner details create clean breaks against the blue. Those smaller areas may not be the first part of a color plan homeowners think about, but they make a noticeable difference once the entire exterior is viewed together.

Finishing With Sherwin-Williams Emerald Rain Refresh
After the preparation, primer, and color layout were complete, we finished the home with Sherwin-Williams Emerald Rain Refresh, a premium Sherwin-Williams exterior paint designed for long-lasting exterior performance.
This premium exterior coating is designed to resist dirt and provide lasting protection from the elements. On a home with a deep exterior color, keeping that finish looking clean is an important part of the overall result.
The completed siding now looks consistent around the home. Paired with the crisp white trim and lighter accent areas, the finish gives the exterior the sharper look the homeowners were after.

The Finished Exterior
The before-and-after difference is easy to see. The original exterior had a lighter, faded appearance, with uneven areas caused by sun exposure. After preparation, full priming, and the new paint system, the house has a much more defined color scheme.
From the garage to the rear and side elevations, In the Navy now sets the tone for the exterior. Extra White keeps the trim bright, while On the Rocks adds a softer transition in the accent areas.
What we like about this project is that the color change works with the home’s existing features. The stone still has a place in the design, the white elements remain crisp, and the new siding color ties the exterior together.
Need Exterior Painting in Denver, NC?
If you live in Covington at Lake Norman, Denver, NC, or the surrounding Lake Norman area, take a look at your siding in different light. Fading, chalking, and uneven color can be easier to spot on the sides that receive the most sun, and those changes can make the whole exterior feel older than it is.
A repaint is also an opportunity to rethink the color of the home, not simply cover the existing shade with something similar. This project shows how a bolder siding color, paired with the right accents and trim, can give a familiar exterior a completely different look.
